How to create a translation

Page history last edited by Kirk Pearson 1 yr ago

The Translations pages of this Wiki are for translations of the http://www.distributedcomputing.info/ website.

You can start a new translation by editing the Translations page and adding an entry like:

* http://distributedcomputing.info/images/finland_flag.gif [[Suomi]] (Finnish)

replacing the link text (ex: "Suomi") with the native name of the language for which you are creating a translation (ex: Suomi for Finnish language). Replace the text in parentheses with the English name of the language (ex: Finnish). Then save that change and click on the new language link to create a page with translations of all of the main website links:

Home, Forum, Wiki, News and Articles, Active Projects, Computing Platforms, Upcoming Projects, Recently Completed Projects, Past Projects, Tools, Development Platforms, Conferences, Parody and Fun Sites, Links, Politics, Teams, Books and Journals, FAQ, Link to Us

See the Italiano translation page for an example.

You can also translate the text of the main website index page on this page.

Then you can recreate the text in one or more of the pages for those links. For example, the Italian translation was started with an "Active Projects" page, Progetti attivi, with two of the project category headers, and two projects under the first category. Don't worry about reproducing the exact formatting of the pages in the main website. The text is the important part. Also, don't worry about translating the entire website at one time. Everyone is welcome to add pieces to, and update pieces in, an existing translation. Over time, each translation should grow into a tree or hierarchy of pages which somewhat resembles the hierarchy of the main website.

If the Wiki code syntax is confusing, you can press the Edit link for any page to see the Wiki code for that page, and copy the code into your own page. Just remember not to save any edits in the other page.

Country flag GIF images are available for most countries. Translators should try a filename with the English/American name of a country followed by _flag.gif (ex: finland_flag.gif). If no image exists with that filename, translators should email Kirk Pearson at kpearson[at]distributedcomputing.info so that I can find an image for that country.

There are no tools for displaying a main website page next to a Wiki page, so it may be helpful for you to open two browser windows, displaying the main website in one and displaying the translation Wiki in the other.
