Documentation

On the forums I have posted a suggestion (http://www.distributedcomputing.info/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=426) about adding documentation/guides/tutorials about the projects to the wiki. One of the reasons I'm suggesting this is that I'm beginning to see many wikis pop up at the different projects. While this might be good for some people, I believe all the wikis must be confusing to newcomers who want to try DC.

What do you people say to my proposal? --Lhademmor 14:05, 24 Jan 2006 (CST)

It could be useful. But I don't think that many wikis are confusing. I read wikis only after I have chosen my project or when I feel that the main project website lacks some important information.
But there are some potential problems. How much traffic in recent changes the community is willing to put up with? I could be control freak, but I feel insecure if I can't review all the recent changes. And different wikis have different rules on copyright. This wiki has the default copyright (http://www.communitywiki.org/en/DefaultCopyright). How do we move here a wiki, which releases all its contributions e.g. under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial licence? Moving would mean difficulties for their copyright policy because then we had to explain for contributors than edits about project X are treated differently copyright-wise.
My opinions are not yet certain, but I think that I have raised valid points to consider. Tristram Shandy 06:58, 27 Jan 2006 (CST)
Update: Kudos to the M4-people for starting to use this wiki for their documentation. Now, I hope some other projects will follow their example and start posting documentation. Maybe we could start. --Lhademmor 02:57, 1 Mar 2006 (CST)

"Current events" replace "New News" on forum?

Again, now I'm thinking far ahead, but maybe the "Current events" menu on the wiki could be put to good use by "moving" the news from the forum to the wiki? Personally, I think it looks better on the wiki. Also not so many messages where it's hard to see dates, when the last event was and so on...

This must be discussed with Kirk and the News guys, but first what do you think?

Translations

I think that the non-English language pages that now reside in the main website should be moved here. It is easier to maintain them here. If you want to change them now, you'll have to e-mail Kirk and wait until he updates the website next time. But this is a wiki, which means that you can update pages quickly. You don't have to ask Kirk to do it on your behalf. This would make Kirk's life a bit easier, too. Tristram Shandy 06:58, 27 Jan 2006 (CST)

Actually, I think it would be easier just to start new translations from scratch, since the ones present on DC.info haven't been updated for ~2 years. --Lhademmor 07:13, 5 Feb 2006 (CST)

upgrading the wiki?

I've noticed that we're running a pretty old version of MediaWiki. A new version should be installed. --Ixfd64 03:41, 17 Feb 2006 (CST)

I agree. I dunno much about the different versions of MediaWiki, but if this is an old version, then we should definitely contact Kirk and request that he upgrades the wiki. Have you contacted him? --Lhademmor 09:24, 17 Feb 2006 (CST)
Has anyone upraded the MediaWiki yet? --Lhademmor 02:54, 1 Mar 2006 (CST)

I attempted to upgrade the MediaWiki software to 1.5.7 today (March 8, 2006), but it didn't work. I will try again when I have more time to debug the upgrade process. --Kpearson

open source projects

I propose to create a small wiki page listing the projects where the client's source code is available. I never found a website focusing on this aspect, but at least for me, it's really important that I can see what's going on with my computer. Even if I won't take the effort to peek into the source, I need that possibility. I've a bad feeling if some company says: "That's really good for mankind, I'm taking your computing power, but you are not allowed to know what calculations our algorithm does." Project of the Day // Week Month

Like on en.wikipedia it could be nice that we have table showing "Featured Project" or Project of the day or statistic // Accomplishment of the day. CedricVonck 15:45, 18 August (GMT-1)
